Ratings assessment

Purpose: The PCPC club schedules organized play by skill level to provide members an opportunity to play with similarly skilled players. This allows all members to have fun and competitive games.

At each skill level there will be a bell-shaped curve of players, typically 10 percent on the low end, 80 percent in the middle and 10 percent on the high end. This balance allows all players to have fun and challenging games. The Ratings Assessment Team’s goal is to take into consideration the skills of the member wanting to move up and see how that fits into the skills of the members in that skill level. We want all members to be challenged but not overwhelmed when moving up.

Assessment Process

  1. Attend a Ratings Assessment Clinic
    a. In the summer, a clinic for each skill level is offered once a month. In the winter, we schedule assessments as often as we can get courts reserved.
    b. Clinics are scheduled for two hours with 8 players. The first hour is observing individual skills: dinking, volleys, serves, returns, etc. The second hour is game play observation.
    c. There are 2-3 members of the Ratings Assessment Team at every clinic. Decisions regarding moving up or remaining at the same level for each individual player are made as a team and each player is discussed at length individually, not as a group.
    d. The Ratings Assessment Team sends an email with feedback highlighting their strengths and areas of opportunity.
  2. DUPR rating or tournament results review
    a. If your DUPR rating has gone up or you have tournament results against higher-rated players, you can send an email to the Ratings Assessment Team to review your results. Upon review, you may be invited to play a few games at the higher skill level to ensure it’s a good fit for you.
  3. USA Pickleball Assessments
    a. If you have had an assessment done by an outside source, you can email your assessment to the Ratings Assessment Team for review. Upon review, you may be invited to play a few games at the higher skill level to ensure it’s a good fit for you.
